odds n’ ends

February 27, 2008

i gave the backlighting another try. i really want  to become more confident with this type of lighting so that i can use it when i am shooting weddings and family sessions. i love that "glowing" effect that you get when the subject is backlight but the background is still dark. like in this image. i just moved myself over about 2 feet so that i wasn’t taking the picture straight on.

1/250sec @ f/3.2    iso 400   70-200mm @ 70mm

this one was taken straight on into the sun.  (exact same technical info) while i love the lens flare, i do wish it wasn’t over her face. i think that i prefer the image above more.

stacy asked me to post my settings for the images in this post. the first shot was 1/500 sec @ f/3.5 iso 200 70-200mm @ 115mm. the second image (sidelighting) was 1/125 sec @ f/3.5 iso 200 70-200mm @ 110mm.

and remember my moon shot from the eclipse last week?  becky made a comment about how i was lucky to also get the star in the shot. well, much to my surprise, that star is actually the planet saturn! how cool is that?

and for those of you who have been following along with ty’s classroom situation, here’s an update. we had a "team" meeting yesterday; teacher, principal, councilor, derek and myself. we discussed the issues and tried to come up with a solution but we ran out of time because the bell rang. derek and i continued the discussion with the councilor and she strongly suggested that we "explore our options". in a round about way, she was basically telling  us that we should move him either to a new classroom or to a new school. so, derek phoned the other school today, and YES! we can move him! most likely not until after spring break, which begins in two weeks! i am beyond thrilled. we still need to go in and fill out the paperwork and break the news to tyler. i’m not sure how he’s going to take the news. but i do believe that it will be the best thing for him.

Michelle: really love that first one! the backlighting is gorgeous. i don't know if i've visited your blog before but you've got some incredible images! nice eye and color.

Nicole: Wow that first shot is amazing. She does glow. I need to try this.

christine: I adore the first shot! Look at her facial expression and with the hat tilted to the side... so friggin cute! I swear this is the same face my oldest daughter sometimes make.

e: kp these are great! I definitely like the first one better as well... let's chat soon about how to do this effectively. I feel like when I do this it's completely haphazard! so so SO glad you have an action plan for tyler. he deserves to be happy and comfortable at school, so he can focus on learning! good luck breaking the news to him. xoxo -e

Amanda: First...these photos are just totally out of this world. The sun flare is so great. I just love it...even if it is over her face a bit. These look like they could be in a clothing magazine. I am so glad things are working out in the Tyler situation. Its so difficult to have a teacher that isn't right. I hope that the transition goes smoothly for him and everyone involved.

redsie: Love your photos! And that first shot is beautiful! and so is she!

Mom2drew: I am thankful things are looking up for Tyler and the teacher situation, must give you a bit of peace. the backlighting looks good here and I agree, I prefer #1, although #2 has a place too.

cari: These photos are amazing!!! Great news about your son! cari

heather munson: Love the first one Kathy....Love Emily's pouting lips! ha ha... So when YOU backlight...do you meter for the face and then take the shot? That is how I have been doing it and sometimes not getting consistent shots!

Deborah: Adore that 1st one! It is out of this world gorgeous!! Kudos for being proactive with your son!!!! Will continue to pray about your situation and that the transition goes smoothly.

Becky (finsup): You know, when I went through my eclipse photos I noticed I had gotten "stars" too, and it was from Angela that I learned that the one on the lower left was Saturn (and apparently the one on the upper right is the star Regulus). Pretty cool! I love both your shots today but agree I prefer the first. I hope the change for Tyler is just the thing he needs!

suzy: I love the first one best but am amazed at both of them! These are great!!

tori: ooh... love the first one! beautiful lighting!

Shawna: Wow these are excellent!! I need to work on backlighting too. I think you nailed it! Love the first one!

Margaret: I really like that first shot and the way the light is hitting her hair. I think you're doing great with your backlighting technique!

jewels: You got it spot on with the backlighting! Do you spot meter when working with back lighting? I usually do, but am just curious b/c your back lit photos are perfect! :) I actually like the flare over her face, b/c it plays with the flare below it. It makes it a more artistic photo, but I do love it! She is beautiful, and so are your photos! cheers, jewels

for the birds!

February 26, 2008

last friday the kids had a the day off school. so after running a few errands, we decided to go to the park and feed the ducks (and seagulls and crows). we stopped at the pet supply store on the way and picked up a bag of wild bird seed. i’m positive that these birds thought it was a gourmet dinner.

this shot cracks me up! it was amazing how they followed emily and tyler around the park because they knew that they had the  bag of "candy" for them!

i’m too tired to post the settings right now but i will come back and
do it tomorrow! :) i’ll also post some more backlighting shot that i
took of emily.

jenny: My kids would LOVE this! Tyler looks so big compared to all of those mallards. I love the deep green coloring of those ducks. :D

Becky (finsup): Wow, that's a lot of ducks. The first one is so funny!

cari: Those are hillarious!!! Especially the first one! Great clarity and colors here! Cari

Jen: OMG! That's a RIOT!!!! Great captures!

Amanda: These are just perfection. Really! You captured something so special and fun. The one I like the most...for some reason...is the last one. Just something about it totally cracks me up.

Danielle: Ok that looks like a lot of fun. I will have to do that with dd when the weather gets better. These pictures are great. I love the first for the same reason as you. They look so crisp and sharp and the colors are beautiful.

Kelly: Wow that is amazing how they all followed along. WONDErFUL capture.. You need to send that to a magazine

Shawna: Wow these are all excellent! They are so bright, vivid and colorful!

Jessica: That first one is perfect!! On all of them the color is fantastic, that singular duck is so well exposed he doesn't even look real! Awesome job!

Amy: Wow, that's a lot of birds! Look like they had fun, great shots!

Sharon Faulk: Those ducks are beautiful! (It's the poop I can't stand. ;) )

suzy: Excellent shots, and what vibrant colors!

backlighting woes

February 22, 2008

i really struggle with backlighting. always have. i had never really tried it until i took wendy’s class last year, and i had such a difficult time getting it right. i was always pointing my lens directly into the light which resulted in this awful looking hazy image. yuck!

so,  every time i get the chance, i practice. over and over again. i think i’m starting to get it. i think????
this was taken in the garage with the door open. there was a piece of white coroplast lying on the floor which resulted in those awesome catchlights! :) my dh is a sign maker and uses the garage as his sign shop.
Img_1904

and how about a little side lighting too. :) emily is really into wearing her hat again. :)

Img_1910

and derek cause he’s just such a good sport! :) i love you honey! xxoo!
and he’s wearing his new "Home Pride Renovations" hat!

Img_1903

Deborah: That first one is great!!!! You are right, those catchlights are HUGE sister!!! Great job. I think you did fantastic on the backlighting!

cari: I think you did a wonderful job with the back lighting!!! I also LOVE that second shot! So cute! Cari

Heather Munson: Look at emily and her hip hat! The first picture is AWESOME Kathy! Pefect! I love backlighting! I struggle with it too...anytime I do get it...I think it was on accident! ha ha

Toni: You are doing a great job on your lighting. I think it looks fantastic. Cute hat! hugs, Toni

Becky (finsup): It's nice to hear how you pros are always learning too. These look great. Your DH has a lot of character in his face.

Amanda: Oh my word! So awesome. I think you totally got it for sure!

Shawna: GREAT SHOTS! I think you nailed them! I wish I could figure out the whole backlighting thing!

Nicole: I think that's pretty awesome backlighting! Now I need to go practice. Love it when they wear hats.

Sharon Faulk: Fun pics! I love that hat!

Debi: you're definitely getting it....the first picture is OUTSTANDING

Debi: you're definitely getting it....the first picture is OUTSTANDING

stacy: i think i'm in love .... with your photography that is. what's the techical info on the shot emily, the b&w?

Michele: Beautiful shots, Kathy! You go, girl:) Very impressive. How lucky your kiddos are to have a mom who can capture them so well! What a treasure.

jenny: Wow! I love the photos of Emily. Great job, Kathy! We can barely walk in our garage (note: order husband to clean it. haha). Those catchlights are amazing. Home Pride Renovations? Did I miss something? What's that all about?

suzy: I'm loving all of your work! I hope you know how talented you are!

something a little different

February 21, 2008

i thought i’d try to branch out a little from my "ordinary" way of editing. the trend right now is to add texture to images. it doesn’t always work on every image but on the right image, it’s absolutely amazing….. i have yet to achieve that result {she types as she is hanging down her head}.  to tell the truth, i haven’t really liked texture on any of my images! but i keep playing and playing, hoping that i will get a result one day that i will like.

while these aren’t "amazing", i do kind of like the way they turned out. all i did was my normal edit then i flipped them to b&w. i then lowered the opacity so that just a hint of colour came through to give it that vintage look. then i just added grain. lots of grain. and then i just selectively removed it on her face, arms and hands.

thanks for looking! :)

jodi pfunder: Love the grain! Texture can be such a great tool to use. Just play with the blending modes and it's lots of fun.

cari: Love, love, love what you did here!!! All of them are awesome! cari

Amanda: I think that these are so fun and AWESOME. The texture does add a lot of fun.

Jen: I really like these... and they are "perfect"! Great job!

tara pollard pakosta: these are beautifuL~!! she is gorgeous and i just love the texture on theM! tara

Liz: OMGosh that texture technique is awesome! Love these photos, kids and guitars is just a great subject to photo.

Becky (finsup): The graininess works really well with the faded color. So true about texture...there are so many ways to play with them and it's tempting to overdo it. "Use it for good, not evil" right?

Debbi: These are wonderful! Great focus and angles and I love the texture!

Travis Cooper: Nice job with the textures. I like the shot of her hands playing the best. Nicely done with the new editing.

jewels: The texture and grain are so fitting for these photos! Good angles, and lighting! Cheers, jewels

toni: Wow, your composition in all of these is right on! Just a perfect job. tfs. Toni

Amy: Wow, these came out awesome! I love the shots and the pp'ing you did.

Tera: Great pics and I love the pping here!!

suzy: Very nice shots! I like them all!

leah: these are very fun pics!! like your editing and your shots! thanks for sharing and for sharing how you pp'ed them!

Heather Munson: These are wonderful Kathy...I still haven't ventured in the world of textures yet! I love the second picture...wonderful composition!

the eclipse

February 21, 2008

we watched the lunar eclipse last night. tyler was less than interested. i don’t think he really understood what was happening. emily, on the other hand, was so excited about it. she took her camera and tried desperately to take pictures of it. i felt really bad for her because she just couldn’t get a good shot with the little p&s that we gave her for christmas. i can’t tell you though how much it warms my heart to know how enthusiastic she got about taking pictures! i LOVE it!

i was took this shot using my new lens. i am SO thankful that i splurged and got the image stablizer feature. this image was taken hand held! yup, no tripod used!!! i highly recommend the IS feature on the canon lens! amazing!

Img_1940

JordanK: We watched the eclipse with our girls last night, but it was below zero and I wasn't ready to freeze my tush off for the moon! LOL Your shot is beautiful, and I love the little story of your DD. It's so fun to see the kids take an interest in our obsessions, isn't it?

cari: That is an amazing shot! Wonderful job! Cari

Margaret: That is such a great shot. And even handheld! Wow!

Stacey: Very cool! I would TOTALLY need a IS feature when I ever buy a lense... My hands are SOO unsteady! Great shot! That's so cute that your DD was so excited, too bad it didn't turn out well

Becky (finsup): Great one! Love the star you got too.

Cherie: you did avery nice job !!!!

Shannon G: Stunning Kathy! I was all set up, had my camera and 70-200 2.8 ready to go too....but missed it because of a baby shower running late. ugh. Maybe next time!

Debbi: Great job! I'm so glad I have the Image Stabilizer as well (even though I really had no idea what it was when I got it! :))
