cobble hill fall fair

September 3, 2009

i can remember when i was a kid, how i used to love the first week of back to school because it always meant that the fall hants county exhibition was just around the corner. and it also meant that i was going to be entering all my 4-h projects from the year into the exhibition to compete with all the other kids entering similar projects. and i always secretly hoped that i would get a first place ribbon on my entries but a second or third place was cool too. just not as cool as the first place one. it also meant that i was “legally” allowed to skip out on school the first day of the exhibition because of my 4-h commitment. THAT was the coolest and best part. that along with the cotton candy, the midway and all the other fun stuff that a fall country fair holds.

this year, my kids were excited for the cobble hill fair. while they aren’t enrolled in 4-h, they are still able to enter projects into any categories that they wish to. emily was very excited and committed, entering 3 items (cookies, a beaded necklace and a scarf – all hand made by her) and the bike parade. tyler was only interested in the bike parade. as we headed off saturday morning, i was flooded with memories of my fall fair days as a kid. so much fun! such great memories!

here are some of our memories from the 100th cobble hill fair.

(images from left to right) ROW 1: tyler and his canadian bike; canadian flag on ty’s bike; emily’s bcspca bike; bicycle tire; ROW 2: bag pipers leading bike parade; opening speeches; patiently waiting  for speeches to end; flower exhibit; ROW 3: amazing food art – cucumber shark; vegetable exhibit; incredible edible art; best in class ribbon; ROW4 : way-finding signage; beautiful dahlias; emily’s cookies with the first place ribbon; apple exhibit.

NOTE: emily’s beaded necklace placed third and her scarf received an honourable mention. both kids  received ribbons for their bicycle decor.

Jane Eaton Hamilton: Nice captures. Congrats on the prizes.

deb: Congratulations to Emily for her ribbons. She must have been very excited! It looks like the fair was fun...the images are wonderful :)

i’ve been keeping a secret

September 2, 2009

for the past 5 weeks or so i’ve been keeping a secret. a secret that i couldn’t even share with one of my bestest friends. you see, she had a very special birthday coming up and i was part of the “comittee” that was planning a surprise party for her. it was so hard to keep it from her but in the end, we managed to do it.

we celebrated her birthday this past weekend. and i have to say that all that planning paid off!  we had the best tail-gate-hoe-down EVER!! lots of food, an awesome birthday cupcake cake, a group gift, a memorable slideshow, heartfelt speeches, and life-size stand-ups of the birthday girl herself. there was even a band that had us all up dancing in the dirt until almost midnight – that’s when the band shut it down so we wouldn’t upset any neighbours.

AJ: You sure were keeping a secret! You and my other bestest friends! And you know I loved every minute of it . . . especially, imparticularly being with everyone I love with all my heart! Thanks KP, it won't soon be forgotten! AJ

Deb: Looks like the party was a huge success!!!

Jennifer: A tailgate hoe-down!! What an AWESOME idea for a party!!! My neighbor and I were thinking of planning a block party for our street-- there are two cul-de-sacs nearby,a great place for tailgating...hmmm...
